Steve Hall : CCCS 2023-24 Assignment, Grade, and Course Information

IMPORTANT REMINDER REGARDING GRADES:
An overall average of 60 is required to pass any course at Cross Creek. In my 7th Math classes, tests count for 80% of the overall grade. Assignments count 20%. I ask parents to personally check all student assignments to make sure students are doing problems correctly and initial each assignment to indicate that it is satisfactory. When students give me a completed assignment with a parent’s initials or signature, I give a grade of 100 for that assignment. That means that if students turn in all their assignments, they must maintain a test average of 50 in order to pass the course. To keep track of your student’s grades and progress, use ccgrade.com. If you see any zeros for daily grades, make sure those assignments get turned in. If you see low test grades (especially if those test grades are less than 50!), make sure your student sets up a time with me to retake the test, after, of course, restudying the material covered on the test. Grades in my classes do NOT “build through the semester.”

I DO ACCEPT LATE ASSIGNMENTS WITHOUT PENALTY! BUT FOR BEST RESULTS, PLEASE MAKE SURE STUDENTS GET THEM DONE BEFORE EACH TEST! THE PURPOSE OF ASSIGNMENTS IS TO GIVE STUDENTS AN OPPORTUNITY TO GET HELP FROM PARENTS (OR OTHERS) TO ENSURE THAT THEY UNDERSTAND THE PROBLEMS BEFORE THE TEST! (PARENTS, PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR CHILD UNDERSTANDS THE WORK BEFORE YOU INITIAL THE ASSIGNMENTS!) REMEMBER: TESTS COUNT 80% OF THE GRADE! YOU MUST LEARN THE MATERIAL! IT IS NOT UNUSUAL FOR SOME STUDENTS TO WAIT UNTIL AFTER THE TEST IS GIVEN (OR EVEN TO THE END OF THE QUARTER) TO TURN IN ASSIGNMENTS! THIS IS A VERY BAD MISTAKE! PLEASE DON’T ABUSE THE FACT THAT I DO ACCEPT LATE ASSIGNMENTS! THAT BAD HABIT TENDS TO KILL YOUR GRADES!

ALSO, PLEASE NOTE THAT ALL MATH STUDENTS MUST KNOW THEIR MULTIPLICATION TABLES! NO EXCUSES! DO THE WORK! GET THEM MEMORIZED! CAN YOU MEMORIZE A PHONE NUMBER? YOUR ADDRESS? THEN YOU CAN MEMORIZE YOUR MULTIPLICATION TABLES! N-O E-X-C-U-S-E-S !!!! 7TH-GRADE MATH STUDENTS ARE NOT ALLOWED TO USE CALCULATORS ON TESTS.

In summary, (1) Make sure ALL assignments are completed correctly, initialed, and turned in to me, and (2) make sure the material covered by low test scores is CAREFULLY STUDIED AND LEARNED, then (AND ONLY THEN!) have the student schedule a time to retake those tests.
