My Personal CCCS Grade Averaging Procedure

I have discovered that currently, as has happened from time-to-time in the past, ccgrade is using an incorrect formula to calculate my students’ grade averages. I am providing this procedure (below) for you so that you can calculate your student’s TRUE average as opposed to the incorrect average that ccgrade has been showing.  Unfortunately, the incorrect grade shown in ccgrade is sometimes artificially HIGH, giving the impression that the student’s grade is higher than it really is.

Here’s an explanation. In my classes at CCCS, test grades count nearly twice as much as assignment grades. That is because it is on tests that I find out what the student has really learned. Assignments are a learning process. I encourage parents or friends to help with assignments. I will be glad to help students with assignments myself. I invite students to ask me about any assignment problems they do not understand. That’s why I ask parents to sign or initial each assignment. I expect parents to be involved personally with student’s assignment work (as well as test preparation.) The signature is the parent’s way of letting me know that the assignment was completed to the parent’s satisfaction. Therefore, I do NOT check all the student’s work on assignments. When I see the completed assignment with a parent’s signature, I give the student a completion grade of 100. However, assignments do not tell me whether students are actually learning the material. I discover whether students have actually learned the material when I give tests. Therefore, the test average counts nearly twice as much as the assignment average. You should think of assignments as preparation for tests.

I’m very sorry for the confusion about student averages! However, the incorrect formula tends to give so much emphasis to assignments, that students could actually make zeros on tests and still pass the class. Of course, that is not a true indication of what students are actually learning. Hopefully I can get (and keep) the formula in ccgrade fixed. But I have no way to directly change the ccgrade formula myself. Thanks for your patience and understanding! Please feel free to text or call me (and leave a voicemail message) if you have more questions.

If you wish to calculate the CORRECT average for your student, here is the procedure:

To calculate the student’s assignment grade average:
Add up the total of all the student’s assignment grades.
Divide that number by the total number of assignments given.
The resulting number is the student’s  assignment grade average.

To calculate the student’s test grade average:
Now add up the total of all the student’s test grades.
Divide that number by the total number of tests given.
The resulting number is the student’s test grade average.

The test grade average counts 65% of the final grade average for the quarter.
The Assignment grade average counts 35% of the final grade average for the quarter.

To calculate the final grade average for the quarter:
Multiply the assignment grade average by 0.35
Multiply the test grade average by 0.65
Add those two numbers together to get the final grade average.
